In the hustle and bustle of the Christmas season, it is easy to lose sight of its profound meaning. The streets are adorned with lights, carols fill the air, and families come together in joyous celebration. Yet amidst the beauty, one question beckons: What are we truly celebrating—Jesus or ourselves?
The Reason for the Season
Christmas marks the birth of Jesus Christ, the Savior who came to redeem humanity from sin and death. His arrival was not in grandeur but in humility—a baby born in a manger, heralded by angels, and visited by shepherds. The message of His birth is clear: God’s love for humanity is so great that He gave His only Son to bring salvation (John 3:16).
The Magi, upon recognizing the significance of Jesus’ birth, journeyed far to worship Him. They presented gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh—tokens that symbolized His kingship, divinity, and ultimate sacrifice. In their act of worship, they demonstrated the true spirit of Christmas: honoring Christ with our hearts, lives, and resources.
But how often do we, like the Magi, bow before the King during this season? For many, Christmas has become synonymous with extravagant feasts, endless shopping, and lavish parties. While there is nothing inherently wrong with celebrating, the danger lies in forgetting the One we are meant to celebrate.
Jesus came to give us eternal life, to free us from the chains of sin, and to fill our hearts with His peace. Yet, how easily we exchange His presence for fleeting pleasures. This Christmas, let us pause and reflect:
Q1. Are our celebrations drawing us closer to Christ?
Q2. Are we using this season to share His love with others?
Q3. Have we offered Him the gift of our worship, gratitude, and obedience?
Making Christ the Center
To rediscover the true essence of Christmas, we must realign our hearts with its purpose. Here are three ways to make Christ the center of our celebrations:
1. Offer Him Your Time: Just as the Magi journeyed to worship Jesus, we too must intentionally seek Him. Spend time in prayer, reading Scripture, and meditating on His love. Let your heart be captivated by the wonder of His birth.
2. Share His Love: Christmas is a season of giving—not just material gifts but acts of kindness, compassion, and service. Reflect Christ’s love by reaching out to the lonely, feeding the hungry, and comforting the hurting and essentially sharing the Gospel.
3. Worship Him Fully: True worship is more than songs or rituals; it is a life surrendered to God. Offer Jesus the gift of your heart, your talents, and your obedience. Let every aspect of your life declare His glory.
The Joy of True Celebration
When we choose to celebrate Jesus, Christmas becomes more than a holiday; it becomes a holy day. The joy we experience is no longer tied to the gifts under the tree or the festivities around us. Instead, it springs from the knowledge that God is with us—Emmanuel—bringing hope, peace, and eternal life. So this Christmas, let us echo the actions of the Magi. Let us bow in awe before the King of Kings, offering Him our worship and adoration. Let our celebrations point to the One who is the source of all joy.
For when Christ is at the center, Christmas becomes what it was always meant to be: a celebration of the greatest gift the world has ever known.
"Thanks be to God for His indescribable gift!" (2 Corinthians 9:15).
